What Is A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns, often called "caps," are tailor-made coverings for decayed or damaged teeth. They protect and fortify the tooth, preventing further issues.

Available in various materials, including gold, ceramics and zirconia, we’ll work with you to select the best option for your needs and budget.

Dental crowns are incredibly versatile, typically used for:

  • Repairing severe decay when a filling isn't sufficient
  • Reinforcing a tooth at risk of further damage
  • Topping a dental implant
  • Protecting a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Forming part of a dental bridge for missing teeth
  • Enhancing the appearance of misshapen or stained teeth

The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown usually involves 2-3 visits. After an initial consultation and assessment of your teeth, we'll clean the affected tooth and prepare it for the crown.

Impressions of your tooth are sent to a lab for custom crown fabrication, and a temporary crown is placed on the interim.

Depending on the material, your final crown can be put on same day! Crowns that require a metal base or gold will need two visits.

Once the tooth is prepared for the crown, the doctors will take a “goop-less impression” via a digital scanner to send to the lab. Sometimes, analog impressions are needed depending on material.

Once your final crown is ready, we'll ensure a perfect fit before securely placing it. You'll leave with a fully restored and functional smile.

Benefits Of A Dental Crown

Dental crowns offer several advantages:

  • Improved chewing ability for a comfortable eating experience
  • Enhanced protection against tooth extraction
  • Potential to last over 15 years with proper care
  • Lowered risk of future oral health issues
  • Customizable for a seamless blend with your natural smile
