Protecting The Foundation Of Your Smile

While we want to make sure your teeth are healthy, functional, and beautiful, your gum tissue is just as important for a number of reasons. Without healthy gums, your teeth don’t have a place to live! It’s another reason why routine care at home and our dental office is crucial to maintaining positive oral health.

The good news is even severe levels of gum disease can be treated by Dr. Williams and Dr. Denison and their team. If you have tender or sensitive gums, give our dental office a call for gum disease treatment in Tyler, TX.

Scaling & Root Planing

When advanced levels of gum disease (i.e. periodontitis) appear, scaling and root planing (also known as deep cleaning) needs to be performed in order to treat your symptoms. Scaling involves the removal of hardened plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

Root planing is the next step of treatment, which involves smoothing out the roots of teeth so they can reattach to the gums. This also reduces the risk of future infection. In most cases, multiple appointments will be needed to complete deep cleaning therapy.

Antibiotic Therapy

Following your initial deep cleaning procedure, we’ll apply small amounts of antibiotics to the small pockets that have formed in between your teeth.

As gum disease develops, these pockets become deeper over time, making it easier for plaque to develop inside the mouth. Once applied, the antibiotic slowly releases and begins healing the gum tissue.

While this therapy is not needed for all gum treatments, it’s often performed to speed up the healing process in between deep cleaning.
